This month, we’d like to introduce you to the green end manager role. Read below to hear from Chilco’s Green End Manager, Charlie Jackman, as well his supervisor, John Johnson.
“I have been working with Charlie for 8 years now since he started at IFG as the Chilco boiler/kilns supervisor. He is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable boiler operators I have seen in the industry. Charlie is one of those guys who has vast industry experience and can operate in many different environments. When asked about what job he enjoys, his response has always been “whatever IFG needs” and he is there for us. Besides the boiler/kilns, Charlie took over the maintenance manager position and has recently accepted the green end manager role at Chilco. Charlie has a knack for team building and that is apparent with how well he and his sawmill team are performing. His passion for sawmilling is very apparent, as is his desire to be out in the woods teaching his grandchildren how to hunt.

I oversee all operations related to the log yard and sawmill, ensuring efficient processing of raw materials while maintaining safety, quality, production standards and financial goals. I collaborate with the supervisors, dry end manager, quality manager, maintenance manager and the plant superintendent to meet quality standards and overall production targets for optimum efficiency. I coach, mentor, train and team build with supervisors and employees using hands on methods and metrics to achieve one common goal that enhances IFG culture and standards.
The green end manger role is important for the safety and leadership of the green end and its performance. The sawmill has goals to achieve so that other departments can set and achieve their goals also. The saying that sawmill is “King” has some worth to it because the production and the cost that is associated to it plays a key role in the entire plant and its budgeting. The green end relationships with all departments is vital to the success of the Chilco operations. A great team,great leadership an honest effort and a hard days work is our base when manufacturing lumber to Idaho Forest Group’s standards for our partners and consumers.
I started working at a sawmill when I was 17yrs old. I worked to pay for my way through college where I studied natural resources and log scaling. I continued working in the sawmill as a vacation relief operator and was fortunate to learn how to operate all sawmill machinery. I became a sawmill supervisor in my early 20’s and a superintendent in my 30’s and I loved everything about it. Over several years I have held several supervisor roles trying to learn everything I could about the entire operations of manufacturing lumber and also the financial side of it. Learning sawmilling, boiler operations, grade, drying and maintenance have been key to the success of my knowledge and ability to be comfortable in the green end position. I am a team builder and I have learned from the wonderful people I have been able to work with over 38 years and have developed some friendships that I am very thankful for.
I love building a team and working with them. I find great joy in learning people and what they’re good at then giving them the tools to bloom out and really shine. I love wood and everything about it, from the trees to the planed lumber that we sell. I love the smell of wood and all the different characteristics of it. My absolute favorite part my job is working with all the people and wanting to produce every piece of lumber that we possibly can. I love the challenge of production and finding unique ways to achieve our goals.
I have been married to my wife Tammi for 34 years and we have 2 children, Shelbi and Dawson, and our son-in-law, Justin. We have 3 grandchildren that we love spending time with. I enjoy playing with the grandkids, coaching sports, hunting, fishing, camping and anything outdoors. I also enjoy spending time with friends.
